Natural History Museum - Urban Nature Project
Our latest project at the Natural History Museum highlights the impact of in-situ terrazzo design, combining practicality, aesthetics, and accessibility. The Nature Activity Centre supported by Amazon Web Services and the Garden Kitchen showcase stunning terrazzo flooring, meticulously crafted to meet strict Light Reflectance Value (LRV) standards, ensuring accessibility through contrasting binder shades. Bespoke plinths and the servery, produced from in-house terrazzo slabs, incorporate the same natural aggregates as the flooring, with a slightly darker binder shade to provide a harmonious yet functional contrast.
The servery’s design is particularly noteworthy, featuring impressive cut to-size terrazzo slabs up to 250cm in length, showcasing precision and expert craftsmanship. The WC walls further extend the terrazzo’s natural aesthetic, featuring concrete finishes with smaller beige aggregates that maintain a cohesive and unified design. The careful selection of aggregates throughout the project creates a timeless and earthy appeal, perfectly complementing the Museum’s natural environment.
This project also integrates modern inclusivity features, including a hearing loop system seamlessly installed beneath the terrazzo flooring, ensuring the space is welcoming and accessible. With its durable, accessible, and sustainable design, this in-situ terrazzo installation is a prime example of how innovative flooring solutions can elevate public spaces. Ideal for high traffic areas, our terrazzo designs deliver unmatched durability, timeless beauty, and exceptional functionality.
